A Little History:

What began as a frontier trading post on the Missouri River in 1822 has blossomed into a thriving center of commerce and cultural activity. The city is equally proud of its rich heritage, which dates back to the legendary Jesse James gang riding through the historic downtown square. Liberty's rich history attracts visitors from around the nation.

First settled in the early 1820's, the town square showcases genuine early 19th century architecture and a stately white stone courthouse built in 1935. The square also is home to the Clay County Museum and Historical Society, which was built in 1877 as a drug store with a doctor's office above. A hallmark of Liberty's notorious past, the Jesse James Bank gives visitors a glimpse of what the bank looked like on February 13, 1866 when customers witnessed the first recorded daylight bank robbery, alleged to have been orchestrated by Jesse James.

Now a historic landmark, the building is the oldest on the square and serves as a museum recounting the James Gang's exploits and other period history. Today, the square and surrounding downtown streets feature a variety of stores and restaurants, form bed-and-breakfasts homes to antique shops. The Liberty square offers a unique mix of retail shops, including and antique shops, gift stores, two book stores, and interior decorating shop, and a large furniture gallery.
